Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris born October 20 1964) is an American lawyer and politician who is currently the 49th vice-president of the United States. She is the first woman to hold the vice presidency and the highest ranking female politician in U.S history. As a part of the Democratic Party, she previously served as attorney general for California from 2011 until 2017 and was a United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She started her career with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She was then recruited to join the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. She was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003. Harris was elected Attorney General of California in 2010 and was elected again in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States Senator from California between 2017 until 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the second African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. As Senator, Harris was a vocal advocate for federal de-scheduling of healthcare, and cannabis legalization which could lead to the citizenship of undocumented immigrants, as well as the DREAM Act which bans assault weapons. She was well-known for her direct questions to Trump government officials during Senate hearings.
